Letterman vs. O'Reilly

[via Crooks and Liars]

David Letterman didn't try to hide the fact last night that he just plain doesn't like Bill O'Reilly. He wasted no time bashing FOX News and doing what few people can do — ridiculing O'Reillys ratings (Letterman's audience is more than 2x as large .) While sparring over Iraq, Letterman interrupted the giant talking head saying he "doesn't care" what Bill has to say. When Bill O, in typical FAUX form, tried to suggest that Dave believes "Bush is an evil liar" and that "America is a bad country" Letterman comes back with the line of the month:

"You're trying to put words in my mouth just the way you put artificial facts in your head."

For context, here's one of O'Reilly's previous appearances on Letterman:

Letterman: "Im not smart enough to debate you point to point on this but I have the feeling that about 60% of what you say is crap"

That was in response to O'Reilly saying that he would never let anyone say on his shoiw -- as Cindy Sheehan apparently says -- that terrorists who blow up women and children are "freedom fighters."

I gotta agree with Bill on that, and I'll bet you do, too.

There's no question that O'Reilly is obnoxious and biased, and gives the Bush administration huge amounts of slack when an intellectually honest journalist would nail them to the wall.

But Sheehan -- and by extension, Letterman's blanket defense of her -- is as extreme and biased as O'Reilly himself.

For some strange reason, David -- stickler for accuracy that he is -- wasn't ready to simply accept Bill O'Reilly's word that Sheehan called terrorists "freedom fighters."

That's fair and balanced of him. "Show your work" is always good form.

It turns out that this particular factoid lies in the 40% "non-crap" part of what O'Reilly says.

Here's the quote. It appears on a video that can be viewed here, on a video produced by Veterans for Peace. (Warning: 68MB Quicktime movie!)

"You know that the president says Iraq is the central front in the war on terrorism, don't you believe that?" asked Mark Knoller of CBS, surrounded by a host of other reporters.

"No, because it's not true," Sheehan replied. "You know Iraq was no threat to the United States of America until we invaded. I mean they're not even a threat to the United States of America. Iraq was not involved in 9-11, Iraq was not a terrorist state. But now that we have decimated the country, the borders are open, freedom fighters from other countries are going in, and they [American troops] have created more terrorism by going to an Islamic country, devastating the country and killing innocent people in that country. The terrorism is growing and people who never thought of being car bombers or suicide bombers are now doing it because they want the United States of America out of their country. "

Just to be a stickler on accuracy, how is the usage of 'freedom fighter' in that quote neccesarily refering to terrorists? Seems to me like that assumes non-Iraqis entering Iraq for purposes of getting in on the combat are automatically terrorists when it is quite possible that they are soldiers willing to fight and die for the right of self-determination for their Islamic neighbors. So how can that kind of indeterminate situation be interpreted to be a 'factoid' one way or the other?

Just sayin'.
